How to Remove a Drain Plug From a Metal Sink

Metal sinks, such as those made out of stainless steel, are durable and easy to clean. They can also add a stylish touch to your kitchen or bathroom. Many of these sinks utilize a drain plug to hold water inside the sink tub. These stoppers are connected by a lift lever and handle through the straight piece of pipe, called the tailpiece, mounted just below the drain.       Press the push handle so that the drain plug is in the raised position.

      Place a small piece of wood or plastic, an old toothbrush is good for this, underneath the drain plug to wedge it open. Using wood or plastic will help prevent the metal in the sink from being scratched.

      Get down underneath the sink. Remove any objects that may be in the way so that you can see the tailpiece directly underneath the sink drain.

      Look on the side of the tailpiece for the plug coupling. The horizontal lift lever will run into the coupling and tailpiece at a right angle. Unscrew the coupling and slide it down the lift lever. Use the pliers if necessary.

      Pull the drain lever and ball valve out of the tailpiece.

      Remove the drain plug from the metal sink by pulling it straight up out of the drain. Move the piece of plastic or wood to prevent it from falling into the drain.
