How to Operate a Hair Crimper Iron
Women can produce temporary, fancy and pinched patterns in the hair known as crimping with a crimping iron. Hair crimper irons are made of steel or ceramic and produce deep-set waves in hair through electric heat. While there may be other methods of crimping hair, such as tightly tressed overnight braids or setting hair with crimping rods, hair-crimping irons achieve the fastest results. Beauty salons offer crimp-ironed styles with professional crimping irons modulated to control the amount of heat applied. Achieve professional style results by learning to operate a crimping iron while modifying salon costs and building proper hair care. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Assemble hair-styling tools and preheat your crimping iron. Preheat your crimping iron. Crimping irons work best on straightened hair. If the hair is curly or coarse, straighten hair beforehand to prepare for a crimping session. Blow drying, flattening irons, or chemical straighteners are often used to straighten hair.
-
2
Apply a heat protectant to protect the hair when crimping. Apply heat protectant to the hair. For coarse hair, measure approximately a teaspoon to a tablespoon of an oil-based product or serum according to thickness and length. Massage the heat protectant onto the hair, making sure all of the hair is coated with protectant. Smooth the remaining protectant over the hair.

3
Mist hair with a heat protectant before applying the crimper iron. Mist hair with a water-based non-alcohol heat protectant for fine-hair types. Allow the hair to dry before applying the crimping iron. This will shield the hair from over-drying or burning with the crimping iron.
-
4
Butterfly clips or soft scrunchies can separate the hair for crimping. Separate the hair into sections using butterfly clips or scrunchies.
-
5
Crimp styles do not have to include the entire head of hair. Apply the crimping iron to one section of hair at a time. Move the crimping iron gradually down the length of the section, from root to front if crimping the entire head. If choosing special sections of hair, apply the crimping iron in that area. Close the crimping plates together over each section for about five seconds. Monitor the heat of the crimping iron.
-
6
Loosen crimped waves with your fingers. Cool the crimping iron by lowering heat if too hot. Finger comb the hair loosely and adjust without using a brush. Brushing the hair after crimping diffuses the crimp pattern, creating a fuzzy look.
-
7
Wide-tooth combs can lift hair to fullness without combing. Lift hair gently with a wide-toothed comb, allowing the hair to fall back into place rather than combing out. This presents a full-bodied look without losing the crimps.
-
8
Style crimped waves according to preference. Finish with hairspray to hold the crimp waves. Style according to preference. Allow the crimping iron to completely cool before packing it away.

Tips & Warnings
Some crimping irons come with different-styled crimp attachment plates to achieve tight or loose crimp patterns. You can also hold the crimp iron longer to achieve deeper crimps or lighter pressure for less pressed-in crimp waves. A finishing spray holds the set waves.
Hair can dry out and break from repeated crimping iron use. To protect from damage, apply a deep moisturizing conditioner within days of using the crimping iron to rehydrate the scalp and nourish the hair.
