How to Tie a Karate Belt for a Photo

How to Tie a Karate Belt for a Photo thumbnail
The Karate belt is important because it keeps the Gi closed and designates skill level.

Although you may be content with tying your Karate belt in a simple knot for class, tying it correctly for photos and matches is quite important. A belt tied according to specifications shows your knowledge of and respect for Karate. Although there are several ways to tie a belt, it should sit above the hips, be firmly secured, not cross itself at the back and have ends of equal length that extend downward.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your martial arts jacket so that the left side crosses over the right.

    • 2

Find the middle of your belt by folding it in half. Place the center of the belt even with your navel.

    • 3

Wrap both sides of the belt around your body and bring the ends back around to the front of your body. The sides should be of even length.

    • 4

Place the right tail over the left.

    • 5

Loop the right tail over and then back under the belt that is wrapped around your waist.

    • 6

Hold both of the tails in front of you. The left tail should be longer than the right.

    • 7

Place the left tail over the right to form a center hole.

    • 8

Loop the left tail through the center hole.

    • 9

Pull on both tails evenly until the belt is secure and the ends are of equal length.
