Use a towel to stop your hands and feet from slipping on your yoga mat.

There is nothing worse than being in the perfect downward facing dog position when your hands start to slip on your yoga mat and you lose your balance. When using a new rubber yoga mat, some people find their hands and feet slipping. This is normal and will occur until your yoga mat has been put to use and there is a little wear and tear on the mat. There are some steps you can take when using a new yoga mat to stop slipping and make your yoga practice more rewarding.

Place a hand towel at the head of your mat. When you start sweating and start slipping, you can use the towel to dry your hands and feet. You can also place the towel on the yoga mat and place your palms on the towel to help prevent you from slipping.

    • 2

Place your yoga mat in your washing machine and wash it on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Air dry your yoga mat and do not place it in the dryer. Washing your yoga mat will roughen up the surface, which will help keep your hands and feet from slipping.

    • 3

Purchase non-slip yoga gloves and socks. The gloves and socks were designed with sticky surfaces to help you keep your grip and stance when practicing yoga.

    • 4

Purchase a non-stick yoga mat if your slipping problem persists. These yoga mats are more expensive than rubber mats, but they are also washable and you do not have to wear it down to prevent slippage.
