How to Troubleshoot Fuel for the 1995 Ford Contour
Ford Contours are available in gasoline-fueled models only. There is no diesel version. The cars require high-quality unleaded gas to operate properly, and problems with the fuel for the 1995 Ford Contour can include choosing the right fuel, including the octane rating; filling the vehicle with fuel, including finding the fuel filler cap opener; fuel economy problems, including calculating economy; and running out of fuel. Fortunately, these are all problems that can be rectified.

1
Choose the right kind of fuel for the Ford Contour if you hear knocking. This car takes 87 octane fuel. The adjective used for this type of fuel is usually "Regular."
-
2
Unlatch the fuel filler door by pushing the front end of the release handle on the floor next to the driver's seat if you can't find the opener. Some Ford models don't have exterior fuel filler door catches. There will however, be an override release inside the trunk that you can use if the release handle doesn't work. It's marked with a fuel pump icon and is on the right side of the trunk interior.

3
Calculate fuel economy if fuel use appears excessive. Fill the tank completely and record the odometer reading. Record any future fuel purchases in gallons. After a few tanks, record the final mileage reading. Calculate economy by dividing total miles driven by gallons used. Compare that MPG reading with EPA (see below) estimates for the car. Any large deviations can indicate a need for service.

4
Crank the engine several times if you've run out of fuel and have replaced it, and the engine won't start. The fuel pump needs to redistribute fuel from the tank to the engine.
