How to Make Window Curtains With Rings

How to Make Window Curtains With Rings thumbnail
Whether it's in the shower or over a window, rings add a decorative flair to any curtain arrangement.

If you want to use a decorative curtain rod for your curtains, don't cover it up by making a rod pocket curtain or valance that will hide all but the finials on the ends of the rod. Instead, make window curtains with rings to hang them so you can see the beauty of the curtain rod between each ring. In order to do this, you will need to make holes in the top of the curtain with the use of a handy grommet tool. Basic sewing skills are also needed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your window's height and width. Add 13 inches to the width of the window and 1.5 inches to the height, then cut your fabric to these measurements.

    • 2

Press the side seams in by 3/4 inch, then in by another 3/4 inch, using a heated iron. Sew in place using a straight stitch. Press the bottom hem in by 1/2 inch, then 1/2 inch again and sew in place with another straight stitch. Press the top hem down by 1/2 inch toward the right side of the fabric.

    • 3

Pin 3/4-inch binding strips over the top hem of the curtain. Pin in place and turn the side edges under where they meet the sides of the curtain itself. Sew a straight stitch around all four edges of the binding to attach it to the curtain. This will stabilize the curtain fabric and enable it to support the grommets.

    • 4

Use a fabric marker and a ruler or tape measure to mark the position where you will attach the grommets to the top of the curtain where the binding is. Put one mark on the binding on one side, then measure approximately every 4 inches across to the other side.

    • 5

Cut holes in the fabric where you marked the spots for the grommets. Use pointed scissors or a sharp screwdriver or other tool to do so.

    • 6

Turn the fabric so that the wrong side faces up, positioning it on a firm but clean surface, such as a worktable or a hard concrete floor covered in a clean tarp.

    • 7

Place the male end of the grommet through the hole in the curtain on the right side, so that the end of the male grommet piece pokes through to the wrong side of the fabric. Rest the back of the male grommet piece on the flat grommet tool, positioned on the floor or work surface.

    • 8

Push the female end of the grommet down on top of the male end from the wrong side of the fabric, and put the taller grommet tool on top of the female end. Use your hammer or mallet to pound the grommet tool onto the female end, pressing the two pieces of the grommet together around the fabric.

    • 9

Repeat steps 7 and 8 across the top of the fabric.

    • 10

Use curtain rings to hang the curtain onto a rod. Attach each ring through the hole made by the grommet and slide the rings onto the curtain rod.
