How to Find the Status of a Green Card
A green card allows a non-U.S. citizen to become a legal permanent resident. Because there are many steps that have to be completed, the processing time frame to receive the card is lengthy and usually ranges from 15-24 months. Although finding the status of your green card application may seem intimidating, there are actually several ways to find the status of your application.

Access the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services green card status web page. A link to this page is found in the Resources section of this article.

Type your receipt number in the appropriate field.

Click the "check status" link. The various green card processing steps are represented by a circle. Each circle will be filled in for each task that is completed.

Call 800-375-5283.

Provide the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services representative your receipt number.

Receive your status.

Access the automatic case update page on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. There is a link to this page in the Resources section of this article.

Click the "Register as an applicant customer" link.

Review the terms and agreements. Afterward, click "acknowledge."

Complete the form. You will be asked to provide your name, address, telephone number and email address. Additionally, you will need to provide a user ID, password and security question.

Click "submit." As each milestone is completed in your application process, an email alert will be sent to you.
