Sony Surround-sound Installation Instructions
Watching the latest summer blockbuster on TV is not the viewing experience it could be if all you have to carry the sound are the TV's speakers. A true movie fan needs something with more sizzle and pop. Install a surround-sound system, and the problem is solved. Most home theater systems also include a Blu-ray and DVD player. Your TV's speakers will not pump out the base or tweet with glee like a surround-sound system will. Sony is a generally reliable brand, and its surround-sound speakers can be hooked up with ease.
Things You'll Need
- Sony surround-sound base unit
- Front right and left speakers
- Base speaker
- Center speaker
- Rear right and left speakers
- Connecting cable (HDMI or RCA)
- Color-coded speaker wires
- S-Air unit
Instructions
-
-
1
Move your entertainment center carefully to give yourself enough room to work behind it.
-
2
Unplug the television.
-
-
3
Place your Sony surround-sound receiver/player in the location you have selected for it.
-
4
Place your speakers. There are front-right and front-left speakers, a base speaker, a center speaker, and rear right and left speakers. Each speaker's placement position is labeled on the backs of the speakers.
-
5
Notice that the connectors on the backs of the speakers are color-coded. Connect the speaker wires to each speaker, then plug the other end of the wires into the matching colors on the receiver unit. The wire with a black stripe is for negative, the other wire is positive.
-
6
Place your S-Air Unit near an electric outlet, somewhere behind your seating area, for example behind a sofa. It receives wireless signals from the surround-sound unit so that wires don't have to be run accross your living room for the rear left and right speakers.
-
7
Connect your rear left and right speakers to the S-Air Unit, using the color coded wires to attach them. Do this in the same way your other speakers were attached to the receiver unit.
-
8
Plug your "S-Air" unit into the electric outlet.
-
9
Connect your HDMI cable into the HDMI-in port on the television.
-
10
Plug the HDMI cable into the HDMI-out port on your Sony surround-sound receiver.
-
11
Plug your electronics back into the electrical outlet.
-
12
Pop in a movie, and check to see if the system and all your speakers are working.
-
13
Move your entertainment center back to its proper position.

Tips & Warnings
To keep extra wires out of the way, use a small zip tie to band together any slack/extra speaker wiring, just behind the receiver unit.
