How to Prevent Mildew on Windows thumbnail
Preventing mildew may be easier than removing it.

Mildew is a black or white growth produced by fungus. Mildew thrives in areas of high moisture and high temperatures. This often includes windows, particularly bathroom and kitchen windows. In addition to being unsightly, mildew has a foul odor and may irritate people with allergy problems. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent mildew from growing on your windows and remove any mildew that already has begun to grow. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clean windows and windowsills. Soil can supply enough food for mildew to start growing, as can greasy films. Use a cleaning agent such as bleach or window cleaner to clean the windows and areas around the windows.

    • 2

Get rid of dampness in the air. Mildew requires moisture to grow. This is why mildew is more likely to develop on bathroom windows than living room windows. You can get rid of dampness by setting up a dehumidifier. In addition, be sure to open the windows frequently.

    • 3

Remove excess moisture from the window. Use a sponge or squeegee to remove excess moisture from the windows and the areas around the windows, such as shower walls and shower curtains.

    • 4

Clean windows with a cleaning agent designed to kill mildew. If mildew already has begun to grow on your windows, wipe the window down with a cleaning agent that contains chlorine, bleach or sodium hypochlorite. These chemicals are designed to get rid of mold and mildew.
