From baby showers to birthdays, a fondant whale adds an aquatic theme to any cake. Making a whale figurine out of fondant is not the quickest task, but it’s simple enough for beginners. Fondant is a pliable sugar dough that you can mold into different shapes. It has a smooth and shiny surface that gives decorations a professional look. You can find it in plain and colored forms at supermarkets and craft stores.

Step 1

Roll a ball of blue fondant to a slightly larger size than you want the whale’s body. Press the back end of the ball down gently to create a short tail. Press the sides of the tail inward to help develope the tail shape. Smooth your fingers over the shape to round out any sharp lines.

Step 2

Roll out a thin sheet of blue fondant with a rolling pin. Cut a small triangle shape from the sheet with a sharp knife. Place the triangle with the top point facing down so that it looks like a tail. Press a finger into the top of the triangle, along the flat side, to make an indent like the indent on a whale’s tail.

Step 3

Brush the top point of the triangle, or the point opposite the indent, with a light coating of water. Press the top third of the triangle gently into the whale’s short tail, smoothing the fondant together. Curl the fluke, or triangle, part of the tail upward slightly.

Step 4

Roll a pea-size ball of white fondant. Flatten the ball with your fingers. Roll a sesame seed-size ball of black fondant. Flatten the ball with your fingers. Brush the back of the black circle with a light coat of water. Press the black circle, water side down, onto the white circle to make an eyeball. Brush the back of the white circle with a light coat of water. Press the white circle, water side down, onto the whale where the eye would be. Repeat the process to create a second eye.

Step 5

Roll a sesame-seed-size ball of black fondant. Flatten the ball with your fingers. Brush the back of the circle with a light coat of water. Place the circle where the blowhole would be.

Step 6

Roll the red fondant into a thin sheet. Trace the shape of a smiling mouth onto the fondant with a butter knife. Cut the shape from the fondant with a sharp knife. Brush the back of the mouth with a light coat of water. Press the mouth shape, water side down, onto the whale where the mouth would be.
