How to Install BMX Rear Brakes

How to Install BMX Rear Brakes thumbnail
The rear brakes on your BMX can help you stop if you need to.

BMX motorcross bicycle racing became popular in the early 1970s. Since the advent of ESPN's X Games in 1995, BMX racing has gained even more popularity. Some racers prefer not to install brakes. However, stunt riders and jumpers do use their brakes for sudden stops in the wake of a jump. Many BMX bikes come without the rear brakes on the bike. If that ends up being the case, you will have to install your own brakes, a job that takes approximately 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the right hand grip from the handle bars. You may have to twist it back and forth some to get it started, but it will eventually pull off.

    • 2

Slide the brake lever onto the handle bars and tighten it with your Allen wrench. Replace your hand grip.

    • 3

Turn your BMX upside down and place the rear U-shaped brake arm to the brake bosses. The brake bosses are two knobs that stick up where the brakes mount to. Align the holes on your brake arm to match the brake bosses. Slide arm down and fasten it with the nut. Use a wrench to tighten the nuts.

Run your brake cable from the hand grip to the brake arm and attach it using the Allen wrench to tighten it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test your brakes immediately after you install them to make sure they are working appropriately.
