How to Troubleshoot a Leaking Radiator Valve

How to Troubleshoot a Leaking Radiator Valve thumbnail
You can diagnose and remedy a leaking radiator valve.

A radiator's valve is a control that opens or closes, regulating the flow of water into the radiator. The valve can develop a leak that, when identified, should be fixed quickly to avoid water damage to floors, carpets and furnishings. It is easy to determine which part of the valve is the source of the leak, meaning you can attempt a remedy that will hopefully avoid the need to replace the valve or the radiator. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe away any moisture from around the valve and hold a tissue to the part of the valve from which you suspect the leak is coming from. The leak will either be from the cap nut, which is the nut on the horizontal pipe between the valve and the radiator itself, or the spindle nut, directly below the valve control.

    • 2

Tighten the cap nut with the spanner if this is where the leak appears to be coming from.

    • 3

Tighten the spindle nut if this appears to be the source of the leak. If it continues leaking, undo the nut entirely, remove the spindle and apply a few winds of PTFE tape to the thread. Screw the spindle tightly back into position.

    • 4

Replace the valve if the leak continues.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place a towel underneath the valve if you have not already done so, as more water may leak out when you remove the spindle.

  • Turn off the radiator and ensure it is cold before beginning work.

  • Do not over tighten either the cap nut or the spindle, as this can cause damage to the threads.
