Things You'll Need

  • Stain stick

  • Warm water

  • Mild laundry detergent

  • 1 cup white distilled vinegar

  • 2 white tennis shoes

Use vinegar to remove smells from your down comforter.

Although down comforters are light in weight, they provide maximum warmth. Unfortunately, down comforters can become dirty and a little stinky over time, especially if you have a small child who is still learning how to use the potty. Follow the appropriate cleaning steps and use caution when removing odors from your down comforter.

Step 1

Pre-treat any stains on your down comforter that may be responsible for the nasty odor with a stain stick. Let the treatment remain on the stains for an hour or two before you wash the comforter.

Step 3

Add your normal amount of mild laundry detergent and 1 cup of white distilled vinegar to the water in the washing machine. Cleaning the down comforter will get rid of any minor odors while the vinegar works to eliminate the stronger ones.

Step 4

Place your down comforter in the washing machine and add a set of tennis shoes. This will keep the down comforter from bunching up in any one area. Wait for the washing cycle to complete.

Step 5

Transfer the down comforter and the tennis shoes to the dryer. Dry on the low heat setting.

Step 6

Hang your down comforter outside on a clothesline for an hour or two. The fresh air will remove any lingering odors.

Tip

You can also have your down comforter dry cleaned.

Warning

Do not use bleach on your down comforter.
