How to Make a Throw With Hemming Tape
Create a no-sew throw with a finished edge using hemming tape. Fabric stores carry dozen of colors and patterns of fleece. Fleece does not ravel so you can add a flat hem with hem tape; this gives the throw extra weight around the edges, which helps it hang better and gives it a more finished look. Throws make excellent gifts. Make one for that-difficult-to-buy-for man using fabric imprinted with his favorite sport team's logo.
Things You'll Need
- 1½ yards of fleece
- Scissors
- ½-inch fusible hemming tape
- Iron
- Press cloth (optional)
Instructions
-
-
1
Wash the fabric in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not use fabric softener. Line or machine dry on low.
-
2
Trim the edges of the fabric if they are uneven.
-
-
3
Trim at a 45-degree angle. Cut off ½-inch as measured from the corner to the center. This will allow you to miter the corners.
-
4
Cut a 12-inch strip of fusible hemming tape. Starting 3 inches from a corner, place it along one side of the fabric, ½-inch from the edge.
-
5
Fold the edge of the fabric over the hem tape so it completely covers the tape. Be careful not to stretch the fabric as you fold it over.
-
6
Iron the hem with an iron set on low heat and a press cloth. You may need to use a damp press cloth. Check the instructions on the hemming tape package.
-
7
Cut another piece of tape and iron down the next section of the hem in the same way.
-
8
Miter the corner when you reach it. Cut a 3-inch piece of hem tape for each side of the corner and place the end of one piece of tape against the side of the other to form the corner. Fold the edges on each side of the corner up so the sides meet and form a 45-degree angle. Stretch the fleece slightly, if necessary, to completely cover the tape at the corner.
-
9
Iron down all the edges and corners of the throw in the same way.

Tips & Warnings
Use hem tape designed for medium-weight fabric.
Iron only the edge
Be careful to iron only the hem so you do not stretch or scorch the fleece.
Do not use no-iron stick-on hem tape. It is only for temporary repairs.
