How to Keep Raccoons Out of My Dog Pens

How to Keep Raccoons Out of My Dog Pens thumbnail
Do not attempt to corner or capture a raccoon, because it might attack.

Raccoons are nocturnal animals that can be very dangerous if approached. They can also be very destructive. They sometimes attempt to enter homes and buildings through dog/cat entrances. They also might enter your dog pens to steal food. Raccoons usually avoid yards and areas where there is dog urine, but if you still find yourself with raccoon problems in or near your dog pen there are ways to remove the nuisance from your yard completely. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Install motion lights. Raccoons prefer darkness, and putting plenty of light near your dog pens might discourage the little creatures.

    • 2

Keep a waterproof radio near your dog pens. Raccoons do not like human interaction, and hearing voices from a talk station will cause raccoons to avoid the area.

    • 3

Use metal trash cans, and keep them far away from the dog pens. Make sure the cans have sealing lids that are secured tightly.

    • 4

Contact animal-control officers. They can provide traps that might catch your unwanted visitors. Have them place the traps in your dog pens. Make sure that you bring your pets inside your home or take them to a doggie hotel while the traps are in the pens.

    • 5

Install an electrical fence around the dog pen; the fence will shock raccoons that touch it. If you choose this option, make sure to keep your pets indoors and completely away from the dog pens until you remove the electrical fence.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are not licensed, it is illegal in most states for you to trap and relocate raccoons. That is why licensed trappers, such as animal control officers, are required to do any trapping of wildlife animals.
