How to Take Care of Dachshund Dogs thumbnail
Grooming, exercise and a healthy diet will lead to a happy Dachshund.

The Dachshund is a small breed of dog, notorious for its short legs and long body; features for which it is commonly referred to as a wiener dog. They require much of the same attention as other dogs of similar size, although extra care should be taken to ensure that they remain free of such health issues as diabetes, spinal and heart troubles. A timely grooming schedule, regular trips to the vet and a healthy diet are key elements of caring for a Dachshund.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush long-haired varieties on a daily basis. Trim wire-haired Dachshunds semi-annually, and wipe down smooth-haired varieties with a moist cloth every month.

    • 2

Bathe the dog every two months or so. Pour a droplet of Castor oil into each eye. Place a small cotton ball in each ear. Fill the bath with mildly tempered water and several drops of dog shampoo. Massage with warm, soapy water, beginning with the head and working towards the rear. Rinse thoroughly and repeat as necessary. Pat dry with a towel.

    • 3

Trim nails monthly to promote healthy paws and toenails. Clip each nail with a doggy trimmer, taking care to avoid the inner blood vessel, or quick.

    • 4

Walk your Dachshund at least once a day to prevent obesity. Walk short distances, as Dachshunds tire easily. Prevent excessive jumping to protect the spine from injury.

    • 5

Prepare meals according to age. Feed several times a day prior to age one. Offer one daily meal after age one, in combination with several biscuits or snacks. Provide water throughout the day to ensure a healthy coat and easier digestion.

Tips & Warnings

  • Regular brushing will help to promote a shiny coat and eliminate the clumping and shedding of dead hair.

  • Bathing should occur only several times per year as it can lead to skin and coat damage.

  • Keeping a pet first aid kit will ensure preparedness in the event of an injury. Tweezers, peroxide, bandages and medicated powder are all helpful items to have on hand.

  • Adding milk to dry kibble can be helpful, as Dachshunds can digest moistened food more easily.

  • Frequent bathing can decrease the amount of oil in the skin, leading to cracking and irritation.

  • Use only dog soap for bathing.

  • Long toenails can lead to upwardly pointed toes and widely spread feet, both of which are painful.

  • Dachshunds are highly likely to develop diabetes and heart trouble as a result of obesity.
