Candied yams are a traditional dish that is often served during certain holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although you can use canned yams to make the candied yam dish, they can be bland and nutritionally depleted. One solution is to boil fresh yams. Things You'll Need

  • 6 fresh yams
  • Potato peeler
  • Cutting board
  • Butcher knife
  • Pot
  • Water
  • Strainer
  • Glass baking dish
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, diced
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Instructions

    • 1

      Wash six yams under water and place them onto a cutting board.

      Peel the skins off of the yams using a potato peeler. Discard the peels.

      Chop the yams into 1-inch sections using a butcher knife.

      Place the yams into a pot filled halfway up with water.

    • 5

      Heat the water until it boils and then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

      Strain the yams and place the strained yams into a glass baking dish.

      Sprinkle on 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup diced butter and 1 tsp. vanilla extract.

      Bake the yams in a 350-degree Fahrenheit conventional oven for 20 minutes or until they brown on top.
