Psoriasis, an inflammatory skin condition caused by an overproduction of skin cells, affects 2 to 4 percent of the population and, in many cases, is genetic. Once you've had psoriasis, it's impossible to completely avoid getting it again, but here's how to reduce your chances.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sun Visor Or Billed Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Fruits
  • Moisturizers
  • Fruits
  • Moisturizers
  1. Step 1

Avoid stress. Too much stress overloads your immune system, which triggers psoriasis.

  2. Step 2

Eat a healthy diet filled with lots of fruits, vegetables and high-fiber foods.

  3. Step 3

Avoid rubbing your skin vigorously; pat yourself dry when wet.

  4. Step 4

Apply moisturizers, since dry skin is more susceptible to psoriasis. Creams containing alpha-hydroxy acids are most effective in combating dryness.

  5. Step 5

Avoid excessive cold air on your skin. Climate change can bring on psoriasis.

  6. Step 6

Steer clear of substances irritating to your skin: Don't let bleach splash up on your forearm when you're doing laundry, and avoid topical bug repellents.

  7. Step 7

Take appropriate measures to prevent sunburn. Irritating the skin through excessive sunlight, except as ordered by a doctor, can provoke an attack.

  8. Step 8

Avoid injuries to the skin. A gash or a cut in the arm makes the arm more prone to psoriasis.

  9. Step 9

Avoid certain medications, especially beta-blockers and lithium, which can provoke a psoriasis attack. If you've suffered from psoriasis in the past, ask your doctor before adding new medications to your drug regimen.

on 8/16/2009 What is psoriasis? What causes psoriasis? Is there a cure or treatment for psoriasis? Psoriasis is a skin condition, it is a disease, but it is not contagious. The name comes from the Greek word for "itch." It can be hereditary, caused by external influences (allergic reaction to foods or the environment) and sometimes stress. 4-5% of the population is known to be affected, and this number is growing. However, it is suspected that 1 in 5 people have some form of psoriasis either descripts or none descript.
Once you have psoriasis, it is very likely you will have it for ever. It may go away, and come back. It might respond to various treatments, and it may not. Basically psoriasis is your body over producing skin cells. You have too many skin cells in one location which is why it often swells up, becomes dry and even flaky. on 8/21/2008 You do not have to stop dairy products, but change the type of product.

I have switched to 'A2' milk and dairy products which are products from Jersey cows as opposed to the standard Fresian. The A2 proteins in the milk from these cows does not cause the same allergen reaction and all my skin ailments have cleared.

It is becoming more popular and easier to find in Australia now, so I am guessing that you can find it in most other countries....

on 11/22/2005 A year of using pharmaceuticals did nothing to improve my psoriasis, whatsoever. I was sure these medicines were purely cosmetic. I stopped all medication and simultaneously quit eating diary products (especially milk), within a week it cleared all up. Avoid stress, take vitamins and eat fruit too. I'm pretty sure the condition is brought on by either diet or stress. Focus on your diet and learn to relax more often.
