How to Properly Use Self Tanner

Self tanner can give your skin a healthy glow without spending time in the sun. According to the Mayo Clinic website, the active ingredient in self tanner is dihydroxyacetone, and it binds to the outer layer of skin cells to deepen the color. Self tanners are temporary, and are available in a variety of formulas, such as lotion, cream, gel, spray or mousse. Proper application is necessary for the best results, and self tanners usually take several hours or two applications before the color fully develops. With the right technique, you can achieve an even and streak-free golden glow. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Take a shower and use an exfoliating wash cloth, sponge or body wash to remove any dead or dry skin cells from your face and body. This helps prevent the color from depositing on dry areas and creating streaks or blotches.

    • 2

Dry your body completely with a towel before applying the self tanner. Put on latex gloves. For excessively dry skin, combine equal parts self tanner and body lotion. Apply it to excessively dry areas of your skin before applying the tanner to the rest of your body. These areas usually include the elbows, feet and knees.

    • 3

Apply the self tanner to your body using a light, even layer. Start from the face and work your way down. If you use a spray, avoid inhaling the mist. Don't forget to apply the tanner behind your ears and the back of your neck. Use the self tanner sparingly around the elbows, knees and ankles. You may need someone to help you apply the tanner to your back, if you choose to apply it there.

    • 4

Remove the latex gloves, and apply self tanner to a cotton ball. Rub the cotton ball on the tops of your hands and blend into the wrists and fingers. Use the self tanner sparingly in this area to prevent streaks.

    • 5

Allow the self tanner to dry completely before getting dressed. This can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on the formula.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you choose not to use gloves while applying the self tanner, wash your hands after applying it to your body. Then apply the self tanner to the tops of your hands with a cotton ball.

  • Shave your legs before applying the self-tanner for more even results.

  • Wait at least 24 hours before your next shower to allow the color to fully develop.

  • Apply the self tanner daily until the desired color is reached. This can take two or three applications. Maintain it by applying the self tanner every three or four days.

  • Avoid wearing white or light-colored clothing on the day of application to prevent staining.

  • Don't apply self tanner to the bottom of your feet, palms or between the fingers. This can lead to unnatural coloring.
