How to Earn Extra Money for a Move

Relocating is an expensive process, especially when you're planning a long distance move. You have to pay for a moving truck, supplies, storage fees and crew to help you transport your items. In some cases, you may even need to take days off of work. Plan ahead, so that you can earn extra money to pay for your move.

Instructions

Take inventory of the furniture, electronics and other goods you have in your current home. Determine which items you need, and which you can do without. Place an estimated value on each item you don't need, so you can offer it for sale to help pay for your move. Get rid of as many large and heavy items as possible. Kazz Regelman, co-author of "How to Survive a Move" advises, "The less you can move, the less you pay."

    • 2

Post your items for sale on a classified listing or auction website. Take pictures of the items and post them along with suggested prices (or best offer). Take the time to create short descriptions of each item to entice potential buyers.

    • 3

Plan a yard sale weekend if you're moving from a house. Hang posters around your community advertising the sale, and post the yard sale information on classified listing websites. Tag your items for sale and place them in front of the house during the sale.

Blog online about your intended plans, as another way to make extra money for your move. Ask your friends to subscribe to draw traffic to your blog. You can sign up for an online pay-per-click service (like Google Adwords) to generate a small income. In some cases, blog owners find success asking for small donations from readers to support the blogger's efforts.

Visit a temporary employment agency in your area to see if you can find part-time work. Some assignments only last for a few weeks -- just enough time to raise a little extra money before you move. Popular national staffing agencies include Kelly Services, Manpower and CareersUSA.

Offer your services around the community before you leave. Get your entire household on board for this effort. For instance, you can go around to neighbors' homes to cut grass or shovel snow on the weekends. You could also tutor young people in the area on a subject you're familiar with, in the weeks leading up to the move.
