How to Complete Federal Tax Form 1040-EZ

The Internal Revenue Service's form 1040EZ is a simpler, quicker version of the 1040 that some filers use. It is ideal for someone who is single, has no dependents, takes the standard deduction on his taxes and only has a few W-2s to claim. It's basically an easy form for people who have very basic tax situations, like teenagers or college students.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter your name (and name of spouse if applicable), address, Social Security number, and filing status at the top of the form 1040EZ.

    • 2

View your W-2 and other tax forms you've received to fill out the "Income" section of the 1040EZ. Find your total wages in Box 1 of the W-2. Other possible sources of income (and forms you'll receive from the provider) include taxable interest and unemployment compensation. Enter those totals and add them up to determine the adjusted gross income.

    • 3

Answer the question of whether anyone can claim you on his taxes (such as a parent). Use that information to fill out the worksheet on the second page of 1040EZ to determine the amount to list for your combined standard deduction and exemption figure on the next line.

    • 4

Subtract your adjusted gross income from your exemption and deduction figure to determine your taxable income.

    • 5

Add the amount of federal income tax you've had withheld from your paychecks during the year as well as any applicable credits to determine your total payments and credits for the year.

    • 6

Search the tax tables in the instructions that come with 1040EZ to find out your tax amount due. Subtract your payments and credits total from the tax due if the payments and credits figure is smaller to determine your net tax due. Otherwise subtract the tax due from the payments and credits total to determine the amount of your refund.

    • 7

Provide payment information (bank account data) if you're due a refund and enclose a check for payment if you must make a payment. You and your spouse (if applicable) need to sign and date the form.
