How to Customize a BlackBerry Pearl Case
If a standard-issue BlackBerry Pearl case doesn't adequately reflect your colorful personality, never fear. Making your phone make a statement is quick and easy. You can decorate it yourself --- or, if you're not the arts-and-crafts type -- select from a variety of custom case options online. Determine how you'd like your BlackBerry case to look. Do you want to add some "bling" with rhinestones and crystals? Brighten it up with colorful stickers? Having a plan before you start will help make the decorating process go more smoothly.

Look for sturdy, relatively flat items that will stand up to the wear-and-tear of daily use. Avoid easily damaged items, such as feathers or paper designs, and glitter, which will rub off on everything your phone touches. One good option available at crafts stores is a variety of themed sticker sets -- everything from the animal kingdom to Oscar night. These are usually in the scrapbooking section or the kids' craft section. You can also find small rhinestones, sold by themselves or incorporated into peel-and-stick designs such as hearts or flowers. These are often in the jewelry or bridal area. Some permanent markers and craft paints are also useful for drawing freehand designs. Ask a store employee if you have questions about a product or have trouble finding what you want. Also, be sure to pick up craft glue, such as Gem-Tac, super glue or Mini Glue Dots if your decorative items aren't self-adhesive.

When you're ready to decorate, cover your work area with paper to protect it from any spilled glue and lay out all of your supplies.

Attach decorations to the outside of the case until you're happy with the final design. Be sure to follow the directions for the glue you're using and allow plenty of time for the case to dry before you use it.

If you're craft-averse, pick up a ready-made, brightly colored or patterned cover for the Blackberry Pearl. It may not be completely custom, but you can find one at almost any store that sells BlackBerry accessories. (See Resources.)

Tips & Warnings
Keep functionality in mind when decorating your phone's case. The smoother and flatter the decorations are, the less likely they are to snag on your pocket or other items in your purse.
Limit permanent decorations, such as those attached with glue, to the phone's case rather than the phone itself to avoid damaging your BlackBerry.
Browse the online inventory at Etsy for a variety of custom, handmade BlackBerry cases that help support artists and require no work on your part. Choose from styles like metallic leather, quilted fabric and wall-to-wall rhinestones with a Hello Kitty applique.
Try the Unique Skins website if you want to create a "removable, adhesive-backed vinyl cover" for your Blackberry Pearl using a combination of provided backgrounds, uploaded photos and custom text. Each skin is $6.99, and applying one will not void the warranty on your phone, according to the website. (Blackberry Curve 8520 and Blackberry Bold 9700 owners can find the same custom design options for hard plastic cases on Case-Mate's website for about $40 each.)
You may want to test a small amount of the glue you choose on the BlackBerry case before you begin decorating to ensure that it doesn't damage the material.
