Indoor hammocks can provide a new relaxation spot.

Hammocks are a common addition to outdoor spaces, but you can also install them inside for an unconventional lounging or sleeping space. To hang a hammock indoors safely, you need to locate the wall studs---the thick pieces of wood that support the drywall or paneling of your interior walls. The studs should hold the weight of the hammock and anyone resting in it. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Stud finder
  • Electric drill
  • 2 lag hooks, at least 3/8-inch diameter and at least 2 inches long

Instructions

    • 1

For this installation, the hammock should be in a room with walls that are 14 feet to 16 feet apart. Put the measuring tape up against the wall where you want to hang the hammock, until you reach 8 feet. Mark the height with a pencil.

    • 2

Run the stud finder along the wall along the 8-foot height. When you find the center of a stud, mark it with a pencil.

    • 3

Drill a starter hole through the drywall and into the center stud. The hole should be smaller than the diameter of the lag hooks you are using, so the threads will not pull out of the wood.

    • 4

Screw a lag hook into the hole, being careful not to split the stud.

    • 5

Repeat the process of finding a stud on the opposite wall and installing a lag hook.

    • 6

Hang one end of the hammock from the first lag hook. Some hammocks have clips or rings that can attach to the lag hook; for some, you will need to tie a knot using strings attached to the hammock. Consult your hammock's mounting instructions if you are unsure how to connect your brand of hammock to the eye hook.

    • 7

Connect the other end of the hammock to the opposite lag hook.
