Things You'll Need

  • 1 bowl for each planned color of icing
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • Electric mixer
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4 drops food coloring
  • Spoon
  • Pastry bag
  • Piping tips, various types
  • Sprinkles

      Combine the powdered sugar and the butter in a bowl.

      Beat the mixture to a creamy consistency, using the electric mixer.

      Add four drops of food coloring and the water. Mix until the color is completely incorporated into the mixture.

      Repeat this process to make a multitude of different colored icing. Use a fresh bowl for each new color you create.

      Insert a piping tip into the pastry bag.

      Fill the pastry bag with the icing.

      Squeeze the pastry bag while holding the tip over a cut-out cookie. A line of icing will be pushed out onto the cookie. You can squeeze out swirls, lines, spirals or circles.

      Place sprinkles on top of the icing to add color and an artistic quality.
