How to Remove Candle Wax From a Brushed Leather Coat

Removing candle wax stains from suede prevents the suede from becoming matted and ruined.

When candles splatter or spill, the wax creates a stain that consists of the wax material as well as the oil from the wax. A wax splatter on your brushed suede coat may seem disastrous, but it you remove it properly, the wax won't leave a stain. Use the correct technique and cleaning supplies to remove wax stains from suede, as the wrong methods will make the stain worse.

Things You'll Need

• Plastic zip bag
• Ice cubes
• Scraper
• Talcum powder
• Clean cloths
• White vinegar
• Suede brush

Instructions

1. 

   Once the wax is frozen it's easier to remove from your suede coat.

   Place ice cubes in a plastic zip bag. Lay the ice pack on the candle wax stain on your suede coat. Allow the ice pack to remain in place until the wax is hard.

2. Lift the edge of the hardened wax with a plastic scraper. Peel off the candle wax in chunks.

3. Cover the site of the candle wax stain with talcum powder. Leave the talcum powder on the greasy residue from the wax stain overnight so it can absorb the oil. Brush the powder off your coat into a trash bag.

4. Dampen a clean cloth with white vinegar. Squeeze out as much excess liquid as possible. Blot the site of the wax stain on your suede to remove any remaining traces of oil residue from the candle. Let your coat dry completely.

5. Brush your suede coat with a suede brush. Brush against the nap, then with the nap.

Tips & Warnings

• Substitute cornstarch or baking soda for the talcum powder.

• Place your suede coat outside during winter weather to harden candle wax quickly.

• Use an old soft toothbrush to brush your suede if you don't have a suede brush.

• Don't try to wipe up a wax spill on suede as you will spread the stain further.
