How to Cut Material for Quilting
Deciding to make a quilt involves not only sewing but math too. You will need to measure the bed you want to cover adding the overhang amount for each side. Not all quilts over hang so look at your pattern to see if the quilt will need added inches. As always when sewing measure and measure again before cutting. This will make the adventure into quilting easier. It will be fun too to create a new family heirloom to hand down .

Measure the bed you will be making the quilt for. Make sure you measure the bed length and width. Add the amount you want to over hang on each side as well as at the foot of the bed. This will give you the size of the quilt. Measure before cutting any material.

After you have the finished sizes, figure out how the pattern will be laid out. This would be how many squares across and how many down you will need. If you are using a pattern, the square sizes will be in the key. For example, if the quilt is 60 inches across and the squares are 5 x 5, you will easily see how many you will need .

As you are laying out the pattern, you might discover that the squares are not lining up correctly. This is going to take a little more math to figure out how much of the square is needed. You might only need four inches to make the pattern work. Try using half on each side to make the quilt more uniform and even. When the squares are laid out correctly, then you can begin to sew.
