How to Make a Tissue Paper Ball thumbnail
Tissue paper can be used to create inexpensive, beautiful decorations.

Tissue paper balls can be likened to flowers in appearance after they are made. The crafting materials are inexpensive and can be bought in bulk, and the safety and simplicity of the craft makes it suitable for children, making this project a good choice in large classrooms. The beauty and versatility of the paper balls makes them a decorative option for interior decorators, party hosts and homemakers alike.

Instructions

  1. Making Paper Decorations

    • 1

Practice an accordion fold. Take one sheet of tissue paper: Fold the short side up, flip it over and then fold the same side down. Repeat these steps until the entire sheet is creased. The more adept you become with the flipping and folding process, the faster you will be able to complete this task.

    • 2

Layer 10 sheets of tissue paper for a large ball --- or use just 4 sheets for a small ball. Align the corners of the sheets as much as possible. Accordion-fold the layered tissue sheets as you practiced in Step 1. Keep a secure grip on the ends of the paper at all times to ensure an even fold with so many sheets. See Jennie S. Barn's YouTube demonstration for a reference.

    • 3

Create a fan: Collapse the paper into the folded creases, hold the paper lengthwise and fold the entire sheet in half. Wrap a 2-inch length of pipe cleaner twice around the middle. Secure your wrap by twisting or knotting the pipe cleaner. Create a loop through which you can string some fishing wire and hang the paper ball from the ceiling when it's complete.

    • 4

Use your scissors to trim the ends of your fan. Cut the ends into a triangular or curved shape.

    • 5

Turn your trimmed fan into a ball: Lift the edges of the tissue paper facing you up toward the center of the fan. Do this with the opposite side until the two sides meet in the middle. Continue this process with all the sheets in your fan. Work back until the the last tissue sheet is raised.

    • 6

String a piece of fishing wire through the loop in the pipe cleaner to hang your ball. The thin, transparent wire will make the paper ball appear to be floating in midair.
