The definition of the term "hipster" has evolved since it was originally coined in 1940s jazz circles. Modern use of "hipster" refers to members of the urban, middle-class in their late teens or 20s who embrace alternative music, ideas and fashion trends. Although hipster groups can exist in any city, the largest groups exist in London, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Hipsters don't need to abide by mainstream fashion rules because hipster trends constantly evolve as the group agrees that something is cool. Fashion for girl hipsters incorporates classic feminine pieces with trends that work for guy hipsters.

Wear skinny jeans on a regular basis -- the skinnier, the better. Skinny jeans are one of the most definitive pieces of hipster fashion for guys and girls.

Wear leggings on days that you don't wear skinny jeans. You can layer the leggings with a denim or corduroy skirt.

Wear narrow sneakers or slip-on shoes with skinny jeans. If you're wearing leggings, dressy flats or mid-calf boots are trendy choices.

Shop for retro pieces from the 1950s to 1980s at vintage stores, such as vintage boutiques or thrift shops. Look for vintage jackets, T-shirts, dresses, skirts and boots.

Accessorize with large, dark eyeglasses, bright colors, over-sized belts, sweat bands, scarves and wrist cuffs. If you want to be a true hipster, wear a scarf even in warm weather.

Draw inspiration from nostalgic childhood shows and video games. Hipsters often wear T-shirts with '80s cartoon characters and other pop culture references from the '80s, which is the decade in which most hipsters were born.
