How to Register an Already Purchased Visa Gift Card

Visa gift cards are prepaid cards that are a cross between paper gift certificates and debit cards. Like a paper gift certificate, the cards may be used for store purchases and money is deducted with each purchase. Like a debit card, Visa gift cards allow for electronic purchases in person, over the phone or online. Cards must be registered through Visa or individual card issuers before using them online or over the phone. Register your gift card ahead of any plans to make purchases to ensure that your card is activated when you're ready to buy.

Instructions

    • 1

Log onto Visa's gift card registration site.

    • 2

Enter your Visa gift card number and the three-digit code on the back of the card in the correct fields. For the last four digits of the phone number, enter 9999.

    • 3

Complete the registration. Remember exactly how you entered your name. Your name, address and telephone number must match exactly when making an online or phone purchase.

    • 4

Call the number of the card issuer on the back of the card or visit the issuer's website as alternate registration methods. You can register your card via the issuer instead of through Visa.

Tips & Warnings

  • Visa gift card issuers often include registration information with the card purchase. If you are not offered the information.

  • Call the card issuer's helpline, which is printed on the back of the card or included with card purchase materials, for help with registration problems.
