DIY Portable Media Player

DIY Portable Media Player thumbnail
A DIY portable media player will help you understand where your music is coming from.

Open source is a philosophy that everything is free, and open to be modified, added to and improved on. While this is largely applied to software, it's also been applied to hardware, like personal media players. The Daisy mp3 player is an open source mp3 player that is easy to build. By building an open source media player, you're able to learn about the inside of your machine. While these kits are open source, the materials are still costly. At $115 as of 2010, it's a more hands-on way to get an mp3 player but not necessarily a cheaper one.

Instructions

  1. Assemble the Kit

    • 1

Solder the decoder chip onto the circuit board.

    • 2

Solder the stereo jack and the MMC/SD socket to the circuit board.

    • 3

Attach the remaining components to the circuit board with solder. Remember many of these are polarized and need to be placed in the right direction. A diagram should come with the kit.

    Add music

    • 4

Connect an MMC or SD card to your computer.

    • 5

Format the card to a "FAT 32" format. The method to this will depend based on your computer and operating system.

    • 6

Move your music files onto the card. Make sure they are all mp3 files, and are labeled as such. If they aren't, the mp3 player won't be able to read them.

    Listen to music

    • 7

Hook the positive end of your power supply to the pin that says "+5." Hook the negative end to the part that reads "GND."

    • 8

Put in the card and headphones.

    • 9

Turn on the power switch. A green light should come on, and a red light should be flashing.
