Replacing the drive belt on a Caterpillar C-12 is a necessry maintenance task to ensure the engine is running smoothly at all times. The belt transmits power from the crankshaft to the components located on the front of the engine. Once the belt has become frayed, torn or broken, it will require immediate replacement.

Step 1

Open the hood for access to the engine compartment. Ensure the truck is turned off and the key is out of the ignition.

Step 2

Locate the tensioner pulley at the top passenger side of the engine. The tensioner is located below the alternator.

Step 3

Loosen the tensioner pulley with a socket wrench by pushing the arm on the tensioner down to loosen the old belt.

Step 4

Take the belt off the pulley. Replace the old belt with the new belt. Locate the belt routing diagram to ensure the belt is routed correctly.

Step 5

Push the belt tensioner down with the socket wrench. Place the belt over the tensioner pulley to place tension on the belt. Release the tensioner to tighten the belt.

Step 6

Start the truck and allow it to idle. Watch the belt to ensure it runs over the pulleys smoothly.
