How to Engrave Brass
Brass offers a classic look to plaques, signs and plates, among other items. Engraving brass will personalize a gift, communicate a message and add an aesthetically pleasing addition when done with care. While you could easily have brass items engraved at a shop, you can save money and learn a new skill by engraving at home. With a few simple tools, you can learn to create fonts and designs on any brass surface.
Instructions

1
Draw your text or design on the brass surface with pencil. Draw once lightly and trace it again to make it darker. To engrave, you will trace this outline with your engraving cutter.
-
2
Clamp the brass to your work table on both sides for maximum stability.
-
-
3
Put on your goggles if operating an electric cutter. Electric cutters cause brass pieces to spark and fly.
-
4
Trace your outline slowly with your engraver. If needed, trace one light engraving and go back over it once your hand is more steady.
-
5
Dip your towel in hot water and rub away any excess brass dust from the engraving.
