The Greeks believed a vein that runs from your left ring finger to your heart was the shortest route to your heart, which is why they placed the wedding rings on that finger.

Some countries have other traditions. In Germany, the wedding ring is worn on the right hand. The ring goes on the bride's right index finger in a Jewish ceremony, though some brides switch it to their left ring fingers after the wedding.
