How to Get Rid of Orange-Red Tones When You're Coloring Hair thumbnail
Keep your hair color looking healthy by eliminating brassy tones.

Hair can easily turn to an orange-red, or brassy color, when it's not dyed the proper shade. If your hair has a natural red highlight in it -- or if you have a warm skin tone -- dyeing your hair with a warm color will increase the red-orange tones. This can also happen when you are trying to dye hair blond or golden brown. To avoid this, you'll have to dye your hair a cool tone. But luckily, there are two very easy ways to get rid of this problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Toner

    • 1

Purchase a semi-permanent, wash-in hair toner. Toners can be found at any beauty supply store or drug store.

    • 2

Select a color that's one shade darker than your dyed hair. This will add a hint of highlights to your hair, as well.

    • 3

Apply the toner directly to your hair, just like you do when you use regular hair dye. Ensure that you completely saturate your hair.

    • 4

Leave the toner in your hair for the time suggested in the directions.

    • 5

Rinse the toner out in the shower. Do not use shampoo or conditioner. The toner will rid your hair of the red-orange color and leave you with subtle highlights.

    Blue/Purple Shampoo

    • 6

Purchase this special shampoo through any beauty supply stores, Aveda salons, or the Internet. The blue and purple tones help to neutralize the red-orange color, making it disappear.

    • 7

Apply the shampoo in the shower, massaging the product into your hair.

    • 8

      Rinse your hair thoroughly.

    • 9

Add a blue or purple conditioner. Leave the conditioner in your hair for two to three minutes.

    • 10

Rinse the conditioner out thoroughly. These special hair shampoos and conditioners are safe to use every day.
