A U.S. DOT (Department of Transportation) number is a specific identifier for commercial vehicles used for the collection of information for safety audits and inspections. It's mandatory in 31 states for semi-trailers and trailers, pickups with trailers, straight trucks, limousines, passenger vans, and buses, and is required for any businesses engaging in interstate cargo, hazardous material or passenger transportation. There are no regulations regarding the placement of the number, although it's most common to find it on the door or side of the cab.

Determine the best place to display your U.S. DOT number. It must be displayed on both driver and passenger sides, and is most commonly placed on the doors or cab.
