How to Display DOT Numbers on a Truck
A U.S. DOT (Department of Transportation) number is a specific identifier for commercial vehicles used for the collection of information for safety audits and inspections. It's mandatory in 31 states for semi-trailers and trailers, pickups with trailers, straight trucks, limousines, passenger vans, and buses, and is required for any businesses engaging in interstate cargo, hazardous material or passenger transportation. There are no regulations regarding the placement of the number, although it's most common to find it on the door or side of the cab.

1
Apply for a U.S. DOT number by visiting the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Online Registration and Compliance Assistant online. This registration guide includes instructions and information regarding requirements, insurance, and fees.
-
2
Determine the best place to display your U.S. DOT number. It must be displayed on both driver and passenger sides, and is most commonly placed on the doors or cab.
-
-
3
Display the U.S. DOT number in high-contrast to its background color. For example, if the background is black, print the number in white. This is to guarantee visibility by DOT officers and inspectors.
-
4
Print the lettering so it's visible from a stationary distance of 50 feet. This is federally mandated, and is required so inspectors and DOT officers can easily identify the vehicle during inspections and audits.
