How to Make a Tambourine Craft
Whether in a kindergarten class, during Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma's or stuck at home on a rainy day, kids will find ways to make noise and get attention. Why not encourage them to put their energy into making musical noise instead? Show them how to make their own tambourines using common household items. Things You'll Need
- Two pie tins
- Glue
- Fabric scraps, construction paper, tissue paper, glitter and other rickrack (optional)
- Sharp scissors
- Washers (optional)
- Ribbon or twine (optional)
- Jingle bells
- Dry beans (optional)
- Duct tape

Decorate the pie tins by gluing tissue paper, ribbons, glitters and colorful items to the outside bottoms of the pie tins. Allow to dry completely before proceeding to the next steps.

Use the scissors to poke holes through the side of one of the pie tins, at about two-inch intervals. Thread a three- or four-inch piece of ribbon or twine through each pair of holes, so the ends are poking out to the outside of the tin. Thread two washers onto each piece of ribbon or twine, and tie each one into a loop.

Place five to ten jingle bells into one of the pie tins. To create a combination of sounds, add a handful of dried beans.

Place the other pie tin on top of the first, making sure the rims line up.

Secure the two tins together with a duct tape. Avoid taping the washers if you used them.

Tips & Warnings
Sturdy paper plates can be substituted for pie tins.
Use colorful duct tape for a more festive tambourine.
