How to Install Car Gas

How to Install Car Gas thumbnail
Modern gas pumps allow you to pay for your gas with a credit card at the pump.

Virtually all cars require gasoline to provide the engine with power. There are two main types of gasoline that can be put into a car: diesel and unleaded. Unleaded gasoline is the most popular type and is offered in varying levels of octane, depending on the gas station. To determine the gasoline recommended by the manufacturer of your particular car, refer to your car's owner's manual.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the car up to the gas pump so that the gas tank door is able to be reached by the gas nozzle. Ensure that the gas-tank door is on the side of the pump.

    • 2

Turn off the vehicle and remove the keys from the ignition.

    • 3

Pull the gas-tank door release lever, located on the floor beside the driver's seat. If your car does not have a gas-tank door release lever, you can open the gas-tank door by pulling it up, or pushing in on one side to release the magnet.

    • 4

Insert your credit or debit card into the pump card reader, then follow the on-screen instructions to enter your PIN or zip code. Alternatively, you can pre-pay for your gasoline using cash by going into the store. Be sure to provide the clerk with your pump number, located on the top of the pump.

    • 5

      Unscrew the gas cap.

    • 6

Insert the nozzle all the way into the hole in the gas tank receptacle. On some pumps there may be a different nozzle for each type of gasoline, so be sure to use the correct one.

    • 7

Press the product button indicating the type of gasoline that you would like to dispense. Alternatively, lift up on the bottom of the nozzle holder of the nozzle that you are using.

    • 8

Squeeze the handle of the gasoline nozzle to begin dispensing the gasoline into the vehicle.

    • 9

Watch the two gauges on the pump. One gauge indicates the amount of gas, in gallons, that is been pumped. The other gauge indicates the total price of the gas that is being pumped.

    • 10

Release the handle when you have pumped the amount of gas that you would like to pump or when the auto-stop stops the pump, indicating that the tank is full. Do not overfill or top-off the tank, as this could result in a spill.

    • 11

Lift the nozzle up, then pull straight out of the car's gas tank. Place the nozzle back onto the nozzle holder on the pump.

    • 12

Screw the gas cap back onto the gas tank receptacle, then close the gas-tank door.

    • 13

Press "Yes" or "No" if prompted for a receipt, or collect your receipt if one is automatically printed.

Tips & Warnings

  • To get the most out of every dollar, purchase your gasoline in the morning or evening as gasoline increases in density in lower temperatures. Because the pump measures volume rather than density, you will receive a greater amount of gasoline in cooler temperatures.

  • Never smoke at or around a gas pump, as doing so can start a fire.

  • Avoid re-entering your vehicle while pumping gas. If it is necessary to re-enter your vehicle, discharge any static electricity by touching an outside metal piece of your vehicle once you are out of the vehicle.

  • Never leave the pump unattended while pumping gas.
