How to Configure a GPS

How to Configure a GPS thumbnail
GPS units must be configured prior to the first use.

When a new GPS is purchased, it must be set up before it can be used properly. The settings for configuring the GPS include the home location, language and types of voices used for turn-by-turn directions and warnings. These settings are similar with each manufacturer, although the particular wording may vary. Once these settings are configured on the device, it is ready to use on the first trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold down the "Power" button until the unit powers on. The device is on when the manufacturers logo appears. The set-up procedure begins automatically.

    • 2

Touch the desired language, and press "Enter" or "Ok."

    • 3

Set the desired home location. Some units require the full street address to be entered, while others only require the city and state. The touchscreen will open a keyboard; enter the required information by typing it on the keypad. Press "Ok" or "Enter" when finished.

    • 4

Touch the desired voice for turn-by-turn directions. In most cases, the choices will include at least one female and one male voice. Touch "Finish" when done. The configuration is now complete, and the device is ready to use on your first GPS-enhanced trip.
