How to Register a Boom Truck Crane in Ontario
Most vehicles driven on Ontario roads, including commercial vehicles, must be registered with the province's Ministry of Transportation. Boom truck cranes are considered commercial vehicles under the province's Highway Traffic Act and require special certificates and permits. Before you can transport your vehicle to and from a construction site, you need to register it. Registering your vehicle is fairly simple once you know what paperwork and special permits are required to complete the process.

1
Locate a vehicle licensing office (see Resources). Not all offices operated on behalf of the province can issue the special permits and certificates you'll require when registering your boom truck. To save time, check first whether the licensing office can register your vehicle. The ministry provides specialized services at select offices.

2
Provide proof of insurance. Before a vehicle can be registered in Ontario, vehicle owners must meet certain requirements, including insuring their vehicle. Insurance is compulsory and can be obtained through a private company. Anyone caught operating an uninsured vehicle can face substantial fines.

3
Obtain a Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration Certificate (see Resources). Under Ontario law, owners and operators of commercial vehicles, such as a mobile crane, require this certificate to legally drive their vehicle.
-
4
Apply for an oversize and overweight permit (see Resources). This special permit is needed when a vehicle exceeds certain dimensions and weight limits as stated in the Highway Traffic Act. Various oversize and overweight permits are available to commercial vehicle owners. The ministry expects permit holders to abide by the conditions set out in the permit; failure to do so may result in the permit's being revoked and possible prosecution.

Tips & Warnings
You'll have to pay a fee to register your vehicle. Make sure you have the correct methods of payment on hand before submitting your paperwork.
Depending on the gross vehicle weight of your boom truck, you may want to consider applying to the International Registration Plan if you intend to use your truck in other provinces and most states. The plan distributes registration fees among jurisdictions that are members of the plan.
Renew all certificates, permits and license plates before they expire.
