How to Transfer Pictures From a Digital Camera to a Computer Using Windows XP thumbnail
Your camera stores photos on a memory card.

When you snap a few pictures on your digital camera, you're naturally going to want to transfer a few -- or all -- of them to your computer. You can connect your camera to your computer one of two ways: by inserting the memory card or connecting the camera with a USB cable. Windows XP has built-in software that automatically recognizes your pictures and will allow you to transfer them to your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your camera's memory card into your computer if your computer has a built-in memory card reader. If your computer doesn't have a memory card reader, then you can connect an external memory card reader or simply connect your camera to your computer with a USB cable. Windows XP will identify the hardware, and a window will appear.

Click the "Copy pictures to a folder on my computer" option and "OK" if you inserted your camera's memory card. Click the "Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard" option and "OK" if you connected your camera to your computer. A window will open and display the pictures on your computer.

    • 3

Click "Next" if you want to transfer all of your pictures. If you only want to transfer selected pictures, then click the check box on pictures you do not want to copy over. By default, Windows XP selects every picture. You can also click a picture and click the "Rotate Clockwise" or "Rotate counterclockwise" to rotate a picture. Click "Next."

Enter a name to save your pictures as, such as "Family photos." Click "Browse" to select where on your computer you wish to save the pictures. Click the check box next to "Delete pictures from my device after copying them" if you wish to delete the pictures from your camera after transferring them to your computer.

Click "Nothing" if you just want to transfer your pictures to your computer. You can instead elect to publish the pictures to a website or order prints before transferring your pictures.

    • 6

Click "Finish." Double-click the "Safely remove hardware" icon in the Windows task bar. Choose the memory card or USB device you wish to remove or disconnect and click "Stop." Remove the memory card or disconnect the USB cable from the camera.
