Create a homemade corn feeder for hungry and roaming deer.

Providing food for deer is essential if you want to prevent them from feeding on your flowers and trees. Constructing a corn feeder for deer requires a few inexpensive supplies from a local hardware or home and garden supply store. A homemade feeder allows the food to trickle into a container and replenishes automatically when consumed. This is a low-maintenance option and only requires refilling when the feeder is empty. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a slot in a 6' PVC pipe about 2 inches wide and 3 inches deep in the end of the pipe that is going into the container.

    • 2

Drill several small holes into the bottom of a plastic container that measures about 6 inches tall and 16 inches wide. This allows rain to drain out of the container.

    • 3

Attach the pipe to one side of your container using duct tape. Make sure the portion with the slot is facing the center of the container. The container is not enclosed and has an open top. Place the pipe inside the plastic container and 3 inches from the base of the container to allow the feed to drop.

    • 4

Attach the feeder to a tree using sturdy cables such as bungee cords. The container sits at the base of the tree. Make sure the feeder is securely fastened to the tree and does not easily topple over.

    • 5

Pour corn feed into the top of the PVC pipe.

Tips & Warnings

  • This type of homemade corn feeder holds about 50 pounds of corn feed. The corn should last three to four days with five or fewer deer.
