How to Troubleshoot Charter DSL

Troubleshoot DSL service provided by Charter.

Charter DSL is an Internet service provider (ISP) that provides DSL connection speeds that are many times faster than dial-up and is considered a broadband-level carrier. When the DSL connection is not working properly, you must take troubleshooting steps to restore the connection to its full working state. Troubleshooting starts with the equipment onsite and ends with the DSL modem. Any problems beyond the DSL modem are the responsibility of Charter.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power from the DSL modem. Plug the power back in and wait approximately two minutes.

    • 2

Verify the computer is connected to the DSL modem. With a direct wired Ethernet connection, the computer verifies a physical link between the computer and the modem. The modem has a light indicating physical connectivity between itself and the computer. If the computer connects to the modem wirelessly, the computer indicates its current connection status with an icon by the clock in the lower-right corner of the screen.

    • 3

Verify connectivity with the ISP. All DSL modems have one or more lights indicating whether or not a full proper DSL signal is being received from the ISP. These lights are generally solid green. If any lights on the DSL modem are red, this indicates a problem that needs to be resolved with Charter.

    • 4

Unplug a router that may expand the connectivity of the DSL modem. Some DSL modems have the router built in and are unable to perform this step. If the DSL modem is standalone, temporarily connect it directly to a computer instead of a router to verify connectivity. If the computer connects directly, there is an issue with the router that is preventing full communication.

Tips & Warnings

  • The DSL line may be in full working order, but the DSL modem or router may need to be replaced to restore full operation. Contact Charter to have a technician test the line signal.
