How to Welcome a Foreign Exchange Student at the Airport

Bring a sign to welcome the student.

Visiting a country for the first time as a foreign exchange student can be a frightening experience. A warm, friendly greeting will help make the student feel welcomed. Smiling, helping the student with luggage and welcoming the student in her native language also will alleviate some of the student's fears associated with fitting in.

Instructions

1. Carry a large sign with the student's name on it. The sign should be large and brightly colored, so the student will be able to spot it easily among other signs in the pick-up area. Write the student's name in his own language, particularly if the student's country does not use the English alphabet.

2. Bring a small gift. A gift, such as a tourist book or something with the name of your city on it, will show the foreign exchange student that you are thoughtful and welcoming. Gifts also express your pleasure at having the student in your home.

3. Help the student with luggage. Carry the student's luggage. The student likely will have a large number of bags, depending on the length of time that the student will spend in your country. Taking the student's bags will lighten the student's load after the plane ride.

4. Welcome the student in her language. Learn how to say "hello" to the student in her native language. Tell the student that you are happy to have her in your country. Shake the student's hand and smile broadly when you meet.
