Instructions

    • 1

Drink plenty of water. Dry skin is caused by a lack of water, so make sure that you are properly hydrating your body. A common rule of thumb is to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, but if you are thirsty frequently or notice any other signs of dehydration, add an additional glass or two.

    • 2

Shower with warm or cold water, and avoid showering with hot water. Long showers in hot water strip your skin of important natural oils, making you prone to dry facial skin. If you must shower with hot water, limit your time in the water, and avoid using harsh soaps.

    • 3

Exfoliate on a weekly basis. Dead skin cells decrease the effectiveness of lotions and moisturizers on your face. Slough off the dead skin cells with a loofah, soft sponge or textured washcloth before moisturizing to increase the effectiveness.

    • 4

Moisturize your face daily. Pick your favorite moisturizer and use it once a day. Use the moisturizer before bed to help prevent dry facial skin in the morning, and allow more time for the it to soak into your skin. Avoid using scented moisturizers if you have sensitive skin.

    • 5

Protect your skin from the elements. Sun and wind can both dry your facial skin out quickly, take precaution before going outdoors. Use a strong sunscreen daily, and avoid prolonged exposure to any extreme weather. The dry winter air is notorious for stripping the moisture out of your skin, so apply extra lotion before heading out.

Consult a dermatologist if your dry skin persists. Excessively dry facial skin could be a symptom of a variety of dermatological issues, and should be examined by a professional.
