How to Paint Mica Cabinets

How to Paint Mica Cabinets thumbnail
Sand the cabinets to promote adhesion.

Mica cabinets are made of Formica, a slick, waterproof material that is not conducive to paint adhesion. If you apply paint directly over under-prepared Mica cabinets, they will quickly reject their new finish. Abrade the cabinets to stimulate adhesive qualities. Pre-treat the Formica with a primer base coat that will enhance adhesion and promote a lasting, durable finish. Apply each finish using the appropriate type of paintbrush or the finish may dry with unsightly brushstrokes.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the handles and place them somewhere safe.

    • 2

Clean the Mica cabinets with a water-based de-greasing cleanser, using a coarse sponge. Use wet rags to rinse the cabinets. Dry them with towels.

    • 3

Abrade the Mica cabinets to enhance adhesion. Scour the Formica with a palm sander equipped with 180-grit sandpaper until they feels gritty.

    • 4

Protect areas adjacent to the Mica cabinets by covering them with painter's masking paper and tape. Cover your floor with heavy-duty fabric drop cloths.

    • 5

Coat the abraded Mica cabinets with latex primer, using a three-inch polyester paintbrush. Move the brush vertically, applying soft pressure. Allow three hours of drying time.

    • 6

Use fresh water to clean primer from the paintbrush.

    • 7

Coat the primed Mica cabinets with gloss latex paint, using the clean brush. Move the brush vertically, applying soft pressure. Allow three hours of drying time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use satin or flat latex paint on cabinets, as these coatings are prone to stains.

  • Never prime unsanded Mica cabinets, or flaking will result.

  • Never paint unprimed Mica cabinets, or the paint will peel.

  • Don't paint smooth Mica cabinets, using a nylon brush, as this will mar the finish with brushstrokes.
