1
Measure your bedroom walls and draw the floor plan on graph paper. Use the floor plan to determine where to place your furniture without having to physically move it a bunch of times.
-
2
Paint the walls. Use a neutral color if you change your mind a lot or if your parents won't allow you to use bold colors on the walls. Use bold colors, such as lime green or pink, if you have white furniture and want the walls to make most of the impact in the room. Avoid black, unless you plan to only paint one wall black and put a large piece of white or colorful furniture in front of it.

Update your furniture if you can't get new furniture. The pieces you choose could be repurposed from your current bedroom, somewhere else in the house or from yard sales or second-hand stores. Choose a loft bed or daybed if you're short on space. Include a dresser, shelves, chair and desk if possible.

Dress up the walls with framed posters, art, bulletin boards filled with photos or your awards. Use peel-and-stick decals if you want the walls to "pop" but can't paint. Install shelves around the room if you don't have enough storage and display space.
-
5
Add color to the room with your sheets, comforter, curtains and a rug. These items are typically less expensive to replace than furniture or other major pieces in the room and can be switched out to update the look of your room at any time. Play with different patterns and colors, as long as they make you feel comfortable.
-
6
Accessorize the room with themed or colorful items, such as a lamp, pillows, picture frames and throw blankets. Smaller bits of color will make a big impact in a neutral-colored room. Include baskets, bins or other containers to organize and store your stuff. A trundle bed or blow-up furniture will provide extra space when you have friends over without taking up space when you're alone.
