How to Tighten Loose Screws in an Automobile

Many screwdrivers come with a selection of tips, commonly called bits, that are stored in the handle.

Vehicles are made by fastening a variety of mechanical and cosmetic parts. While most major components on automobiles are bolted together, many smaller items are secured by common screws. If one of these screws works its way loose, a part can loosen and malfunction or cause rattles. Fortunately, it is not difficult to tighten most loose screws on your car or truck.

• Screwdriver with multiple tips or assorted screwdrivers

Instructions

1. Locate the loose screw and determine the screwdriver that is the best fit. Common types of screwdriver bits include Phillips, flat-head, hex or Allen and Torx. Bits typically come in several different variations of the same shape to fit a variety of different-sized screws. If you are uncertain, try several bits in the screw until you find one that fits snugly and provides a good grip.

2. Insert the bit in the screwdriver shaft and place the tip of screwdriver into the opening on the top of the screw. Make sure it fits securely.

3. Twist the handle of the screwdriver clockwise. The screw should turn along with it. Continue twisting until the screw has tightened down as far as it will go. The screw should be tight but not forced to the point at which the hole becomes stripped of its threads.

Tips & Warnings

• Tightening a screw too far can strip the hole and make it difficult or impossible to get the screw tight. If you believe the screw threads are stripped, fill the hole with a material that will form a new base for the screw.
