Instructions

1
Place new weatherstripping around the perimeters of your windows. This treatment effectively block the airy drafts.
-
2
Caulk the interior and exterior of your windows where you see cracks in the panels or gaps behind the frames. Caulk is relatively inexpensive and will quickly stop the drafts. Latex caulking can be painted for windows with a view or those you don't hide with blinds or drapery. Silicone caulk is flexible, so it expands and contracts with temperature changes, and is also mildew-resistant.

3
Install sash locks that help hold the window snugly in place against the rails. Use side-mounted sash locks for double-hung windows; they will hold the window tight against the frame.
-
4
Purchase inexpensive plastic window film or insulated window inserts. These products are quick to install, and you need no special skills.
-
5
Use heavy drapery or window blinds in your home. These minimize the drafts somewhat by providing insulation.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure you check all the windows in your home for drafts, particularly in older homes. Attic, basement and seldom used rooms in your home still allow drafts to enter the house, thus making your utility bills higher.
