How to Adjust the Parking Brake on a 1996 Toyota Corolla

A parking brake cable with too much slack or too much tension may not hold your 1997 Toyota Corolla in place properly, allowing manual transmission vehicles to roll after being parked. Fortunately, the parking brake on your Corolla can be adjusted in a matter of minutes. Most novice mechanics can adjust the parking brake at home with a few simple tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the lid to the storage compartment in the center console. Remove the retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the rear of the console away from the front of the console to detach it. On some models, retaining screws can be removed with a Phillips screwdriver where the two console pieces connect.

    • 2

Unscrew the shift knob if your Corolla is equipped with a manual transmission. If your car has an automatic transmission, lift up the shifter bezel by hand and guide it over the shift knob.

    • 3

Remove the retaining screws holding the glove box in place. Slide the glove box out of the dashboard.

    • 4

Remove the lower steering column finish panel, located under the steering column. Remove the two Phillips screws, disconnect the hood-latch release lever from the cable and then remove the two mounting bolts with a socket wrench. Pull the finish panel from the interior.

    • 5

Remove the retaining Phillips screws at the front of the center console. Lift the console up to detach it from the dashboard.

    • 6

Place a wrench over the adjustment nut on the parking brake. This is second nut on the parking brake lever, located lower than the lock nut. Loosen the lock nut with a wrench. Tighten or loosen the lug nut to adjust the travel in the parking brake. Lowering the adjusting nut will create more tension on the parking brake cable, while raising the nut will create less tension on the cable. Tighten the lock nut against the adjusting nut and remove the wrench from the lock nut.

    • 7

Lower the front of the center console and test the parking brake. Lift the center console and readjust the adjusting nut if necessary.

    • 8

Refasten the two retaining screws at the front of the center console.

    • 9

Guide the shifter bezel over the shifter knob and place it onto the center console if your Corolla has an automatic transmission. For models with a manual transmission, screw the shifter knob onto the shifter lever.

    • 10

Position the lower steering column finish panel in place. Install the two mounting bolts with a socket wrench. Attach the hood-latch release cable to the hood-latch release lever. Install and fasten the two retaining screws.

    • 11

Slide the glove box against the dashboard and fasten the retaining screws.

    • 12

Attach the rear of the center console to the front of the center console. On some models, install the two retaining screws that connect the two pieces. Install and tighten the Phillips screws in the storage compartment.
