Items you will need

  • Drain pan

  • Socket wrench

  • Socket set

  • 5 quarts of 5W30 engine oil

  • Oil filter

  • Clean rag

Changing the engine oil in the Toyota Sienna is required every 4,000 miles, to ensure that the oil does not break down. The engine oil is required to lubricate all the moving parts inside the engine, and when the oil breaks down, it can actually harm the engine and cause the engine to fail. Changing the oil periodically will ensure that the Sienna achieves the mileage that Toyota is famous for.

Place a drain pan under the engine of the van. The oil plug is located at the very bottom of the engine.

Loosen the oil plug with a socket wrench. Allow the oil to drain out of the pan. Tighten the plug to the oil pan once the oil is finished draining.

Unscrew the oil filter, located under the exhaust manifold, using an oil filter wrench. Place the old filter in the drain pan with the old engine oil.

Fill the new oil filter with engine oil. Spread oil around the gasket at the top of the filter to lubricate the filter gasket. This will make removal easier for the next oil change interval. Screw the oil filter to the housing by hand. Do not wrench-tighten the filter, as this will strip the threads in the filter.

Slide the drain pan out from underneath the van. Open the hood for access to the engine compartment.

Locate the oil fill cap on top of the engine. Unscrew the cap and place it to the side.

Pour in four quarts of 5W30 engine oil. Pull the engine level dipstick (located next to the engine) out of the tube, and wipe the oil off the ends with a clean rag.

Insert the dipstick back in to the tube and pull it back out. Check the level on the dipstick, and if it does not stop on the full mark, pour in engine oil at half-quart intervals. Checking the oil after each pour, stop when the level reaches the "Full" mark.

Tips

Contact the automotive parts store or a local recycling center for disposal of the waste engine oil.

Warnings

Use caution and wear safety goggles when working under the van. Ensure the parking brake is set.
